Why I’m not going to Vote today

by Shawn Stratton on November 4th, 2008

Voting is our civil duty, is it not?  I don’t believe so, it’s our privilege, our right, and we can chose to exercise it or not.  For far too long people have told me that everyone should vote, every election, and everyone should chose the lesser of two evils based upon their standpoint, I’m writing this tonight to call plain and utter BS! You read right, I’m calling the entire voting system a scam, a fraud, and a failure, not because our votes don’t count, not because they mean nothing, but simply because it’s failed in the way voters make their choices.

8 years ago I was dating a girl in North Carolina, she disclosed to me that she was going to vote for one of the candidates because he was “cuter” than the other; Therein lies the entire philosophical problem I have with our election process.  This election makes that especially true, I shudder to think the amount of African-American voters who will vote for Obama purely based on the fact that he is black; same goes for the opposition with female voters who will vote McCain purely because Palin is a female. By all means, I mean no disrespect for either group, females or African-Americans, my point here is simply the fact that we pick one small determining factor and it outweighs all others.

Has anyone really checked into the policies of McCain or Obama this election? There’s been little discussion in regards to their policies, everything that’s discussed these days is how much Palin is spending on clothes and whether Obama truly is Muslim or not.  We have several major issues that are on the plate, our economy, the Iraq war, dealing with terrorism (or our fear thereof,) and finally the destabilization of the world economic marketplace which will cause War, Famine, Pestilence, etc if it is untreated and remains unchecked. Regardless of which politician is elected, we should all be preparing for a hard road ahead, I will close with a favorite quote:

“Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.” — Douglas Adams
